Below is a list common signs that may indicate your septic tank is full.

- A gurgling sound is heard in the plumbing, or some describe the sound as a burping toilet.
- The water begins to drain slowly from the toilet, drains or sinks.
- A foul smell from drains or toilets.
- Sewage is starting to back up into the home.
- There is standing water or wet spots in the drainfield or near the septic tank.
- A bright green, spongy grass spot is seen in the yard, even during the dry season.
Although these signs are common it is not necessarily always a septic tank issue. If you do not know when the last pumping took place, it is time to start regular maintenance.
Preventing Septic System Problems
To prevent the septic system from backing up or failing the best prevention is regular maintenance. We recommend a septic tank should be pumped out every 3 to 5 years. If you have a pump tank, this should be pumped every 1 to 2 years.
This is a general rule, because if you have a large household, use a garbage disposal or a large amount of water, you may need to have the septic tank pumped more frequently.
The septic system is meant for human waste and toilet paper. Do not flush anything else or pour anything down the drain. Here’s a list of items to never flush or pour down the drain.
